Join us and learn how to embroider this beautiful motif inspired by a portrait of King Henry VIII, currently on display in our exhibition, Holbein at the Tudor Court at the Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace.
Our day will begin with a highlights tour of the exhibition, led by Senior Curator of Prints and Drawings and exhibition curator, Kate Heard. Kate will showcase some her favourite portraits on display, including the iconic depiction of King Henry VIII which inspired the exquisite motif, which was designed especially for this course.
During the class, RSN Tutor, Zinaida Kazban will teach you all the steps to embroider this striking design based on an image of embroidery from the portrait which captures elegance and opulence of the embroidery work in Tudor garments.
In the portrait, King Henry wears a gold doublet decorated with elaborate scrollwork resembling interlocked hearts with gold leaves. The motifs are embroidered over the King’s chest and sleeves and adorned with large precious stones. Your motif will incorporate a combination of costume embroidery techniques to replicate the raised relief seen on Henry VIII’s garment. This includes creating corded outlines, sheer appliqué, and elements of Goldwork.
This class is suitable for all levels and your kit will include everything you require to complete the project after the class. You may like to bring your own magnifiers but please do not bring scissors as you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day.
Tea and coffee will be provided during a short break in the morning. Students are asked to bring a packed lunch and any additional drinks you may require during the day.
