Tudor portraits and surviving items provide much evidence of the Elizabethan taste for richly embellished garments and personal objects. However, the silk materials, gold and silver thread, lace and embroidery which were often used for these designs all fell within the restrictions laid out by the various acts of apparel issued by Queen Elizabeth I.
In this talk, which draws on research carried out for The Typical Tudor, Ninya Mikhaila will share insights into the options for decorative detailing in clothes and accessories available to ordinary people in the late 16th century.
Speaker Ninya Mikhaila, is a maker of high quality reconstructions and replicas of historic dress, working with heritage sites, museums and private clients. She is co-author of the book The Tudor Tailor: Reconstructing 16th Century Dress, published by Batsford in 2006 and has featured on historical documentaries including BBCs ‘A Stitch in Time’ and ‘Tony Robinson's History of Britain’.
Guests will be greeted on arrival with a glass of Prosecco or non-alcoholic Nozeco and have the opportunity to enjoy a private view of the 'Dressed for Shaw' costume exhibition after the talk.
