- Mary, the French Queen, Louis XII, and Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, with Dr Erin Sadlack Mary, the daughter of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York was betrothed in her childhood to Charles of Castile, later the Emperor Charles V. The wedding was due to take place in 1514, but the political landscape changes and Charles and his grandfather, the Emperor Maximilian delayed to such an extent that Mary’s brother, Henry VIII, arranged an alternative match for his sister, to Louis XII of France. Mary, allegedly, persuaded her brother that if she accepted this state marriage, he would permit her to choose her own second husband, which she duly did, to Henry’s horror.
- Emperor Charles V and Isabella of Portugal, with Dr Elizabeth Norton Emperor Charles jilted Henry VIII’s sister, and his daughter, to marry Isabella of Portugal, and her million-ducat dowry. This was a political match insisted on by the Estates of Castile but turned into a deeply affectionate personal relationship. The couple did not spend as much time together as they might have liked, as Charles was permanently travelling, leaving Isabella to act as regent in Spain and bring up their children.
- James V and Marie of Guise, with Dr Michael Pearce James V was eager to maintain the Auld Alliance with France in the face of his predatory uncle, Henry VIII of England. James’s first bride died within a few months, but he married a second time to the widowed Marie of Guise, granddaughter of the duke of Lorraine, and intimate of the French royal family. Their marriage led to a great flourishing of Renaissance art and culture in Scotland.
