As part of our Ritual Year celebrations here at the Museum we will be celebrating Shrovetide, with a celebratory meal. The members of the Bayleaf Interpretation team will demonstrate how the last of the luxury foods would have been cooked and then eaten, prior to the start of the Lenten fast.

Shrovetide, the three-day period leading up to Lent, is a time of preparation for the Easter season, rich with tradition and symbolism. The roots of Shrovetide stretch back to the Medieval period, when it marked the grand conclusion of the cold-weather festivals that began with the Twelve Days of Christmas.

These celebrations continued all the way through to Candlemas on February 2nd, making Shrovetide a fitting end to the winter season and a lively prelude to the solemnity of Lent.

Shrove Sunday marked the beginning of Shrovetide, the three-day feast before the Lenten fast.

Meet our interpretation team as they will be bringing the Museum to life with their daily tasks, preparations and celebrations around Shrovetide.

Please note: This is not an event weekend, just an opportunity to see a special additional demonstration at the Museum over this weekend.
