Visitors will have the opportunity of seeing the original schoolhouse built in 1544 (Grade I listed), to learn something about the history of the school (founded in 1541) and see the beautiful little Victorian chapel.

The Old Hall is the original school house of Berkhamsted School, founded in 1541 by Dean Incent The chapel is late 19th century, modelled on the chapel of Santa Maria dei Miracoli in Venice. A small exhibition relating to the history of the school is available and tours are taken by Old Boys of School House. Old Hall when built in 1544 was the largest school hall in the country. It now has portraits of previous headmasters, including one of Graham Greene's father.

Max 20 people per tour/session. Tour takes approximately 1.5hrs. Old Hall is a Grade I listed building and a very fine example of schools built in the 16th century. The guided tours are conducted by an Old Boy of School House who used to do his homework in Old Hall, which is now used for official functions.The chapel was designed by Charles Henry Rew a local architect who based his design on a chapel in Venice. Directions

The School is half-way down Castle Street, accessed through the lych gate. Old Hall is on your left and the chapel on your right. Assemble in quadrangle close to entrance to Old Hall.
