In conversation with Jo Durrant, Miranda Kaufmann will reveal the remarkable stories of Africans who lived free in Tudor England. Her extensive research uncovered how Black Tudors were present at some of the defining moments of the age, christened, married and buried by the Church, paid wages and allowed to testify in court like any other Tudors. Their fascinating stories are dazzlingly brought to life: from a Black porter who publicly whipped a white Englishman in the hall of a Gloucestershire manor house, to the Mauritanian diver dispatched by Henry VIII to salvage lost treasures from the Mary Rose; transforming how we see this most intriguing period of history.

‘This is history on the cutting edge of archival research, but accessibly written and alive with human details and warmth.David Olusoga, author of Black and British: A Forgotten History

Dr Miranda Kaufmann read History at Christ Church, Oxford and is now an Honorary Fellow of the University of Liverpool, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and of the Royal Society of Arts, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London. Her Wolfson History Prize shortlisted first book Black Tudors: the Untold Story has now been followed by Heiresses: Marriage, Inheritance and Caribbean Slavery.
