A SPECTACULAR TUDOR FESTIVAL LIKE NO OTHER

In 1533 Henry & Gertrude Courtenay invited King Henry VIII for a visit here. This visit is exceptionally well-documented and with help from our partners Historic Royal Palaces, University of Exeter and Powderham Castle we are recreating it as a unique multi-sensory experience.

Based on new research we will share the story of the King's visit to the Courtenays and what life was like at West Horsley Place during this momentous stay. From tasting the King's feast, to Tudor music, falconry and jousting displays it will be a day out to remember.

WHAT YOU CAN SEE & DO

  • Meet the Lord Steward in the Stone Hall and sample real dishes from the King's feast
  • Watch a display by Raphael Falconry, specialists in Tudor falconry
  • Try your hand at Tudor dancing (sessions will be bookable in advance nearer to the event date)
  • Watch Henry VIII take to the lists in a jousting display
  • Fun activities for kids including face painting and shield painting
  • Food & drink stalls including hog roast
  • Chat with experts in historic costume
  • Touch authentic replica costumes recreated from the Courtenay's accounts book
  • Listen to live music of the period performed by strolling musicians
  • Learn about the etiquette of feasting at Henry VIII's court
  • See heritage craftmakers at work
